Fracture Clavicle– Rugby, Motor Cycle, mountain biking
As there are more rugby players then motor cyclist, rugby is the number one sport which results in more clavicle fractures than others. By extending their hand forward to try to break the fall, the impact invariably breaks the bone.
Traditional management argues that most collar bone invariably unites. Giving a sling to the patient for three weeks and let the bone heal naturally. High energy trauma, like road traffic accident seen above, breaks the bone in many fragments.
Note the broken middle fragment here is 2.5cm long. Letting it heals naturally means the shoulder girdle on that side will be shortened by the same amount. In 2007, Canadian research has shown better shoulder function if length was restored to the fractured. Patients return to daily activities early and had less time off work.

The new generation of plates is low profile and contoured along the curvature of the bone. Our study has shown that these plates can remain without necessity for its subsequent removal.
