The trapezium is one of eight carpal (wrist) bones and lies at the base of your thumb. Arthritis in this joint is very common. It is a progressive condition that leads to increasing stiffness and deformity in the thumb.
A trapeziectomy removes the trapezium bone. it is necessary if the joints both above and below the trapezium are arthritic.
Arthritic joint pain can be relieved through smoothing the surfaces between the two bones or removing the painful trapezium (bone) altogether. The picture below shows a hand x-ray after the trapezium bone has been removed. New fibrous tissue will form between the two surfaces to form a fibrous joint.
