The traditional treatment of unstable wrist fractures involved the use of wires and plaster or external scaffolding frames for a period of 6 weeks. Months of physiotherapy was then needed to regain hand function.
We use a locking plate system which allows the patient to mobilise their wrist without plaster at all. The wrist fracture patient can return to work and start driving as soon as they are comfortable. Physiotherapy can commence straight away before the muscles have had a chance to become wasted and weak.
